I disagree. I think Manson was always used as a scapegoat because a man who had been in and out of reformatories since a young age was an easy person to blame as to why these “all-American kids” killed. Just take a look at the killers: Manson didn’t get on with Watson, Watson was the reason Manson and another member of the ranch got involved with the Black Panthers. Kasabian had only lived on the ranch for a matter of weeks, and yet she was the lookout. Manson didn’t really know Van Houten. The only two he really knew and, in a way, trusted were Krenwenkel and Atkins. If he was going to send anyone to kill for him, I think he would have sent those he trusted a lot more, that was in excess on the Ranch. Squeaky, for example.
This story came from Bugliosi, a popularly recognised “dirty lawyer” known for planting evidence. Manson was never given a fair trial, it is said he was not permitted to stand as his own attorney (a right in the US) because he “acted out”, if you read the court transcripts you will see Manson didn’t begin to act out until his rights were stripped from him. He was not even provided the right to testify. The only person during the trial who subscribed to the Helter Skelter theory was Linda Kasabian, who just so happened to be the only person promised immunity if she testified against Manson. The others didn’t begin blaming Manson until they realised they were never getting out.
I’m not saying Manson is an innocent person by any stretch of the imagination. Although he is not guilty of the murders, even citing them. He knew about the murders after the Tate night and before the LaBiancas. He is guilty of perverting the course of justice. Apparently he cited it to “spark a race war”. It’s nonsense, and unfortunately a lot less Hollywood-ised than the story that has led to his notoriety, the killings were Hinman-copycat-killings in the hope of freeing Bobby Beausoleil. It’s really as simple as that.
It baffles me how some would choose to believe a story of “cult leader who thought he was jesus and morphed the minds of his followers with lsd so they would kill for him to start a race war because he believed in armageddon from listening to a beatles song”. Unfortunately, the true story isn’t as Tarantino-esc as that.
